Pet Grief

Pet grief is addressed on many websites and in many different ways by shelters and other community organizations that are pet focused. Everyone experiences this special grief journey in a unique way.

When discussing the grief associated with the loss of a pet, we have to consider that we will go through all of the same phases and stages as those in the established research on grief in general.

The Stages of Pet Grief

We will experience the emotions of guilt, anger and sadness, just as we do in the death of a human. Thoughts of bargaining, and regrets for things not done.

Opportunities missed and signals not picked up on (if a pet dies of an illness) can all arise in this process.

But just as we must do in any of our struggles in life, we need to move ahead, through the grief. You can’t go around it, under it , or over it.

The only way to avoid the disability that grief can bring is to go through it. The journey of grief is rocky, and you are fortunate if you have someone to come alongside of you to walk it with you.

End of Life Arrangements

The most supportive people you will find to fill that role are those who themselves have experienced pet grief. Just as when you lose a member of your human family, certain decisions need to be made in the early moments of your loss.

And just as you would preplan final arrangements for your family member, it eases the first few days if you have some idea of how you will make those necessary decisions.

Several options for disposition of your pet’s remains exist. Cremation is probably the most common, affordable and accessible option. If you live in the country or your municipal ordinances allow for it, you can consider burial.

Goodbyes

How you plan for the final goodbyes to your companion pet greatly impact the resolution of your personal grief. There are numerous choices for pet urns, pet memorial plaques, pet stepping stones and a variety of statuary items.

You can plan the form, process and final resting place of your beloved pet in advance, greatly simplifying the first few days of your personal experience.

Your Pet Hair Spun into Yarn

I discovered a wonderful site as I was looking for ways to remember Tess. I remembered someone at our local State Fair spinning dog hair several years back, and decided to look online to find someone to do that.

I found VIP Fibers , headquartered in Texas, and found the owner to be wonderfully supportive and informative. I just wish that I had saved all of those brushings!!

You can have your pet's hair spun into yarn too, and you don't have to wait until after death. Start saving now, Victoria tells you how on her site.

She gives you all the information you need to have on collection, storage, care and ideas for creating keepsakes as part of your pet grief process.
