Sympathy Verses

Online resources and printed offerings abound with sympathy verses. They can be found in books, cards, and on gifts. Websites provide a multitude of such verses at the click of a mouse.

We have tried to put together a variety of sympathy verses for you to choose from, whatever your intent is , and however you wish to use them to express compassion and caring for someone in need.

Here is one of my special favorites. I like it because it affirms the freedom our spirits experience when released from the constraints of our physical bodies.

It may not reflect exact theological accuracy, but it is one of the most gentle and compassionate sympathy verses and its message is sure to comfort.

Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Anonymous

When he shall die
Take him and cut him out in little stars
And he will make the face of heav'n so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.

~William Shakespeare,
Romeo and Juliet

If tears could build a stairway,
And memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to Heaven
And bring you home again.

~Author Unknown

When it seems that our sorrow is too great to be borne,
let us think of the great family of the heavy-hearted into which our grief has given us entrance.

And inevitably, we will feel about us their arms, their sympathy and their understanding.

- Helen Keller

Hold on to what is good even if it is a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe even if it is a tree which stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do even if it is a long way from here.
Hold on to life even when it is easier letting go.
Hold on to my hand even when I have gone away from you.

- Pueblo Blessing
