Message of Sympathy:
Choices for the Loss of a Pet

A message of sympathy is one of the most important ways to let someone know how much you care. Losing a pet can be so difficult.

People who have never known the companionship of a pet miss out on a great deal of love and nurture despite the responsibility of care and expense.

Mom and Willow

For most of us, the trade off is worth it. Sometimes a message of sympathy is appropriate for people who have lost pets by other means than death.

It was so sad to see my Mom have to say goodbye to her beloved cat, Willow, when a forced move to a nursing facility separated them with very little notice.

Fortunately I was there for the move from the hospital and was able to bring Willow to see her before she was adopted by another family.

Sympathy in the Loss of a Dog

When a pet dog dies, it is like losing a member of the family. A message of sympathy is an important part of acknowledging the grief that pet owners experience with this loss.

Everyone has a favorite pet and for many that is a dog. Whether it be a gentle giant like our ‘grandson’ Patton the Rottweiler, or little fluff balls like our friends Lhasa Apsos, they work themselves into our lives and as is often said, leave pawprints on our hearts.

Dogs might be family pets, hunting partners or companions of the elderly or homebound. In any case, a message of sympathy at the time of loss can be very comforting to the grieving owner.

Many assisted living facilities and retirement homes allow small pets such as dogs and cats to remain with their owners. This is because people are coming to realize what an important role companion pets play in the well being of their owners.

The longer one can continue to enjoy the companionship of a beloved fur person, the longer they can remain emotionally healthy and motivated.

Message of Sympathy
in the Loss of a Cat

Cats are popular family and companion pets as well. Often they are allowed in living spaces that do not allow dogs.

Especially for apartment dwellers, cats are especially adaptable to being indoor pets, and do not have to have outside areas to flourish. This often makes owning a cat easier for a person with a lifestyle that restricts their ability to walk a dog, or manage an outdoor area. Sending a message of sympathy when a cat dies will be personalized for the situation.

You can include a picture of the pet and a personal poem to make the sympathy message unique, giving much comfort and support in a time of grief.

The Loss of a Horse

For many farm dwellers, and more and more city dwellers, horses are best friends and constant companions.

They are known for their intelligence and loyalty, as well as the wonderful relationships that are crafted through years of training and working together.

I am sure many people that would love to enjoy the companionship of a horse do not have the opportunity. For those who do, it is a wonderful gift.

My personal ‘bucket’ list contains the experience of getting to know a horse. I may or may not ever ride, but I long for the opportunity to ‘hang out’ with a horse.

I can imagine the message of sympathy that would fit the loss of a horse companion would be somewhat different than that of a smaller pet.

The sentiments are the same, but often a person-horse relationship entails a different dynamic, with the development of trust which ensures the safety and enjoyment they share.

Losing a Small Pet

Sometimes little furry creatures or even slithery ones can be overlooked in their importance to their owners.

One of our daughters once owned a ferret, and subsequently was nicknamed ‘ferret face’ by her adoring siblings! A message of sympathy is just as important for a child who has lost a beloved hamster as one who has lost a pet dog.

Since smaller pets are often less expensive and easier to care for, many children who may not have the option of owning a cat or dog find joy in caring for a little hamster, gerbil or gecko.

Our granddaughters owned hermit crabs at one time and spent a great deal of time preparing the appropriate habitat and watching their activities.

It is a great gift to be able to communicate sympathy to friends or family members who have lost a pet, regardless of its size or the role it played in their lives.
